In the storage area of a general chemical industry, a leak of 3 to 400 l of 65% nitric acid occurred on the flange of the nitric acid pipeline due to not tight Teflon seal. The leaked acid caused a severe corrosion of surrounding steel parts with formation of nitrous gases. As a result the flange’s iron screws of nearby pipeline of toluene corroded resulting in a 800 l toluene’s release. Alarm was given to internal and town fire brigades. All the critical pipelines were shut-off. The population external to the establishment was alerted. Released nitric acid and toluene were collected and disposed.
