Production constraints and technological developments have favored the breakthrough of automated production systems in the industry since the early 1980s. Sometimes these modern systems still coexist with older manual devices which are maintained to allow operation in degraded mode (maintenance, shutdown, or unit startup). Accidentology, however, shows that this coexistence is not without risk.
