In France, the three-quarters of the total tonnage of dangerous goods transported would be by road, 15% by rail and 3% by inland waterway, with pipeline transport accounting for a very small share. In 2009, 13.8 million tons of dangerous goods were transported by rail (79.4 Mt / road), i.e. 17% of rail freight; Transported 3 times out of 4 by whole trains, 95% of wagons being tank cars which transported 6 Mt of flammable liquids, 5.2 Mt of various chemicals and 2.6 Mt of compressed, liquefied or dissolved gases pressure.
