In an oil terminal, a violent storm caused the supply pipe of a tanker to rupture during a filling operation. A significant quantity of crude oil spilled onto the sea. A specialised team of the refinery intervened immediately and set up floating booms. During this operation, an employee in one of the rescue boats was seriously injured by lightning. The oil spill resulted in severe damage to aquatic fauna (fishes and crustacean farms) and polluted several beaches. Cleaning operations that followed lasted several days. Three days after the incident, the ship owner was ordered to pay 70 million Drachmas (300,000 $).
