At around 20:20, a fire broke out in a landfill containing 2,500 tonnes of waste. Due to rotating winds and insufficient compaction of the waste, the fire spread to the entire waste pile. Residents heard three explosions. A large plume of smoke was visible. Atmospheric measurements did not reveal any toxicity. The fire brigade, assisted by site personnel, sprayed the waste from two ponds and a pond near the site, but the available flow rate was not optimal. Extinguishing is also complicated by the presence of excess waste in the landfill. Clay was placed to smother the fires. Two days after the start of the fire, the situation is under control. The extinguishing water was contained on the site. Surveillance was set up with thermographic monitoring.

The landfill affected by the fire had not received any new waste for over two weeks. It was not equipped with a temporary cover. Insufficient compaction of the waste created air paths that contributed significantly to the spread of the fire to the entire landfill. The operator was issued with a formal notice in April 2018 due to the fact that the authorised storage quantities had been exceeded. In addition, during extinguishing operations, the presence of a refrigerator (WEEE containing a refrigerant), pieces of plasterboard and a camping bottle still containing propane was identified. Thus, several types of prohibited waste were accepted in storage. The presence of this waste could have aggravated the environmental consequences of the fire.

A fire of more limited extent had already occurred on this site 10 days earlier, in another locker (ARIA 51543). Several fires broke out again in the two weeks following the incident and required the intervention of emergency services.

A prefectural order on emergency measures was issued, suspending all acceptance of waste on site.

Following the event, environmental monitoring was set up around the site. Four monitoring campaigns of the surrounding groundwater and soil were carried out over one year. In addition, a fire drill was agreed at the site monitoring commission 7 months later and carried out 13 months later.
