At 4:30 p.m., a truck transporting two IBCs containing 1000 l of hydrochloric acid, five IBCs containing 1000 l of sodium hypochlorite, 200 l of urea in a solution, and solvents overturned on the slip road to the A43 motorway. Several IBCs were damaged and began leaking their contents. The hydrochloric acid and sodium hypochlorite mixed together, forming chlorine gas and sickening the driver of the truck and 38 motorists. Emergency services evacuated six people to hospital. The accident resulted in a massive traffic jam because of people attending a handball match in a nearby arena. Eighty-five firefighters and a specialist company cleaned up the contents of the burst IBCs. A crane then righted the truck so that it could be cleaned off. The road was finally reopened to traffic at 4:00 a.m. The driver of the truck had been speeding slightly at the site of the accident (the speed limit was 50 kph). The media reported that the slip road has seen many accidents.
