In a special industrial waste (SIW), special household waste (SHW), non-hazardous industrial waste (NHIW) and miscellaneous scrap collection and transit centre, an automatic device detected a fire at 7.21 pm and transmitted an alert. At the scene at 7.30 pm, fire services were informed by the inspection of classified facilities of the risks related to the products stored and the presence of fire extinguishing water containment valves. The emergency services succeeded in containing the fire in the SIW and SHW storage building, with the siding panels being partially ripped off in order to spray the interior. Only a few pallets of batteries stored in 200 l drums outside but close to the building ignited through domino effect. Closing the barrage gates contained the fire extinguishing water inside the building, the courtyard of the SIW area, and prevented any pollution. The pH was measured: 7 outside of the warehouse and 12 inside. A concentration of 100 ppm of CO was measured inside the building. After 10.30 pm, a specialist company pumped 5 m³ of water contained inside the building and in the oil separator of the SIW area. This water was incinerated. Unable to prevent access to the building (siding ripped off, anti-theft alarm not working), the operator mandated a security company to monitor the site throughout the night. Collected in the waste disposal facilities, the burned waste mainly included paints, batteries, and mixed SHW (500 l of base solution, 500 l of plant health products, etc.). The neon tubes stored in the same room were not affected by the fire. The exact cause of the fire was unknown. However, the most damaged area of the building corresponded to the area where unsorted SHW containers were placed which may have contained incompatible substances causing an exothermic reaction. Early alerting of firefighters significantly limited the magnitude of the fire. The damages caused were minimal and the special waste collection activity was resumed after repairing the building. Following a previous inspection, the operator had decided to transfer chlorinated solvents into an outside cabinet away from the building. A SHW sorting procedure and the construction of dedicated room was planned.
