At 11.45 am, an external company was demonstrating the electrofilter of line 2 in a disused non-metallic recyclable materials recovery plant established over 2 floors when torch spraying set fire to a nearby condenser. Despite using fire extinguishers, the fire spread releasing a thick blanket of smoke. A safety perimeter was set up and the plant was evacuated. A composite material (GFRP resin) representing 30 m³ of polymer was burned in the afternoon. A neighbouring primary school was contained following a decision made by its Director after seeing the cloud of smoke. Firefighters extinguished the fire after 2 hours of firefighting, and then surveillance continued until the next day until 8 am. The firefighters measured the carbon monoxide (CO) in the school and as the results were normal, the pupils were able to leave the premises. The emergency services confirmed that the smoke had not caused any irritation to the eyes or respiratory tracts of the firefighters and population. As the smoke rose, this contributed to its dilution. A specialist company that treats significant amounts of fire extinguishing water detected no abnormal results on the day of the incident. The site had to remain closed until an expert had been on site. Before restarting the worksite, measures had to be taken to reduce the likelihood of this type of accident happening again.
