In one of a sugar refinery’s 2 silos, fire broke out around 9:30 am in the conveyor belt gallery during works conducted by a subcontractor to replace a brush roller by a scraper. The slashing of the casing on this alfalfa conveyor was occurring as the fire erupted. First responders quickly brought the blaze under control using an extinguisher and then notified a sugar refinery employee outside the silo. This employee merely informed the maintenance manager. Fifteen minutes later, smoke escaped from an alfalfa elevator located adjacent to the works zone. At that time, the maintenance manager was alerted, as was the sector supervisor. The dust removal installation, which had continued to operate, was shut down along with all equipment in both silos. Staff had the situation under control by 10:45 am by sprinkling the ignited alfalfa dust via hatches placed at the foot of the elevator, before verifying the absence of residual hotspots. A monitoring system was introduced for the afternoon and rounds conducted every 2 hours throughout the night. According to the operator, flying sparks were responsible for the accident. A prevention plan and streamlined hot work permit had been established for these works. The operator planned on using for this type of cutting a jigsaw or sabre saw (creating fewer projections) and building awareness of fire hazards among managers and subcontractors.
