A fire broke out at 4 pm in an oil quenching installation of a metallurgical plant during the removal of a 2.5 x 8 m metal sheet from the furnace at a temperature of 925 °C. Despite the intervention of the technicians, the fire spread to the hydraulic unit in the upper part of the sheet metal handling system and then to the building’s roof. Therefore, the employees activated the ‘dump valve’ device on the quenching tank and activated the CO2 extinguishing system. Fire-fighters controlled the fire within 45 minutes. The fire was caused by the metal becoming blocked on its output table following an electrical fault; 600 kg of hydraulic oil were destroyed. An internal investigation was carried out. Corrective actions were implemented before the installation was restarted: troubleshooting procedure, thermal protections for installations, etc.
