During the night of Friday to Saturday, fire on a wood waste crusher at a sawmill spread to part of the sawing facilities. The maintenance team sounded the alert around 4:20 am. Fire-fighters quickly controlled the accident situation, which caused no bodily injuries yet major property damage. Both production lines were heavily damaged. The first one, which handled 2/3 of total output, had to be shut down for 5 months, while the second was restarted just a few days later. The roof beams aligned with the burned installations sustained serious damage as well.

After a site visit by the Inspection Authorities, it was conjectured that the fire had been caused by overheating of the electric motor driving the crusher conveyor belts, before spreading via the belts themselves. This spreading was facilitated by the presence of rubber and sawdust residue accumulated on the drums. Without the combined efforts of fire-fighters and first responders, the blaze could have engulfed the entire mill, including the lumber and waste storage areas.

To prevent such consequences, a sum of €150,000 was allocated for the operator to set up an elimination stream for wastes stored on-site (30,000 m³), including: cogeneration, manufacturing of particleboard and pellets (on-site). This step was expected to allow removal -within 3 months- of all on-site storage, except for a volume of wastes corresponding to the weekly production.
