Fire broke out on a Sunday around 3:30 pm in the mezzanine offices making up part of the 22,000 m² of a flower warehouse at the Rungis International Market. Tenants working in their premises sounded the alarm before the fire detection system was tripped. Nearly 200 fire-fighters responded during a 4-hour period to contain the fire after having to force their way into the burning part of the building. After an explosion, the upper part of the building collapsed, and the falling mezzanine slightly concussed several fire-fighters stationed at that spot. Heat release deformed the metal structure of a cold storage room yet without reaching any of the refrigeration installations using ammonia (NH3) or chloro-fluoro refrigerants. The fire destroyed 2000 m² of premises and 15% of the building was rendered inoperable. Only 2 of the 20 rooftop-type air conditioning units were destroyed. According to initial testimony, the accident was due to a defective electrical installation. Before restarting site activity, an expert building stability assessment was performed by a specialist firm; moreover, the main Police Department laboratory conducted air analyses in the building, which revealed the absence of CO, HCN or dusts. Also, the Inspection Authorities for Classified Facilities requested an inspection report on the post-accident state of both the fire detection and electrical installations.
