Inside a foundry, an explosion in a refining furnace containing 6.7 tonnes of ingot alloys (Fe, Mo, Ni, Co, Al, Ti), 0.5 tonnes of cast iron scrap, 0.8 tonnes of sand and 240 kg of lime projected molten metal and incandescent particles, injuring 7 individuals, 6 of whom required hospitalisation (with 2 being burned so seriously that they had to be transferred to specialised hospitals). Workshop activity was stopped, but no personnel had to be made redundant. No environmental damage was reported. A process supervision flaw caused this accident (sudden release of gas due to the reduction of nickel oxide contained in the sand).
