At 5:10 a.m., a fire was detected by the temperature sensors of a dryer containing 40 tonnes of sunflower seeds in a silo at a farmers’ co-op. The dryer was operating at the time. The dryer’s gas and electricity supplies were cut off, the ventilation system was shut down (vents closed), and employees attacked the fire with a fire hose reel. At around 6:00 a.m., it appeared that the fire was under control. Nevertheless, the situation was monitored. At 8:00 a.m., the fire rekindled. The employees responded again and alerted the public firefighters at around 9:00 a.m. The firefighters used two nozzles (one on a ladder). The electric utility cut off the site’s electricity supply and the grain column was emptied via the dryer’s slide gates. The fire was extinguished at around 11:30 a.m. The firefighters left at around 1:00 p.m. after checking for any remaining hot spots. The dryer suffered no structural damage. The 10 m³ of extinguishing water was collected in the elevator pits and pumped out by a specialist firm. According to the operator, the sunflower seeds became clogged in the column and formed a hot spot. In addition, the weather conditions raised the moisture content of the harvested seeds and made drying harder. The site’s fire hose reel was retrofitted to make it easier for the onsite firefighters to respond to fires.
