A flameless combustion of flour dust occurred around 9:30 am at the level of a conveyor belt within the underground grain transfer duct running between the storage silos and the mill. Fire-fighters brought the incident under control by around 12:30 pm by spraying water; they encountered difficulties in advancing inside the smoke-filled gallery and wound up locating the fire through use of a thermal camera. The binding of one of the 100 belt guiding rollers caused the heating that ultimately led to the fire. No injuries were reported and property damage was estimated at €16,000. A portion of the belt and roller were replaced; the other portions were cleaned and inspected. The sprinkler-based extinction system equipping the tunnel did not activate due to insufficient heat flux. The investigation would reveal that dust accumulation in the gallery exceeded the threshold value of 50 g/m³ due to a process change in grain cleaning; the operator had planned on installing during 2009 a new flour cleaning system. A similar accident happened again 8 days later (ARIA 36069).
