At around 9 am, a metal unit with 1,000 t of wheat of a 4,500 t silo ruptured across its entire height causing grains to spill over the municipal road next to the cooperative’s site. The capacity split open presented risks of collapse and the 2 units identical to the unit affected located on either side of it were deformed following mechanical stresses caused by the handling installations connected to the handling tower. The establishment’s entrance gate was destroyed. A resident couple, whose house was located 10 m from one of the units, were evacuated for the night and the road traffic was interrupted for 2.5 days to switch over the facilities to safety mode and evacuate the grains to another of the company’s sites. This work required the installation of a telescopic crane to support the roof of the collapsed unit and the use of a 60 t/h grain suction machine to recover the wheat. The inspection authorities for classified facilities carried out an investigation. The 2 deformed units, respectively containing 570 and 520 t of wheat, were fitted with a circular reinforcement at their base (cable), however, the capacity affected had no special reinforcement. The external visual appearance of the 3 units highlighted the age of the structures that, according to the operator, had been installed around 1963 – 1965. The accident was the result of the breakage of vertical assembly bolts between 2 panels of the unit’s shell.
