In a sofa manufacturing plant, late afternoon a fire destroyed a 2,000 m² building of finished products (presence of wood and PE foam). Staff were evacuated. Firefighters used 7 nozzles, one of which was mounted on a ladder, and contained the fire in 45 minutes. They extinguished a number of residual fires during the site’s night-time surveillance. The production building was not affected by the fire. The significant volume of smoke that was released from the blaze forced the police to prohibit traffic on the road bordering the plant. The day after, the inspection authorities for classified facilities noted that the building affected was not equipped with suitable fire detection equipment and that the fire extinguishing water had not been contained in the absence of basins. It was therefore likely to have caused pollution in the aquatic environment. A report on the causes and resources to be implemented to reduce the likelihood of such a fire from happening again had to be sent to the inspection authorities for classified facilities.
