Around 11 pm, the night crew at a factory manufacturing structural wood elements and wood cabinets detected the onset of combustion (through odour, heat) in a 10-tonne wood chip silo. Immediately alerted, emergency responders set up a 150-m safety perimeter. The closest employees and dwellings were evacuated for a 4-hour period. Fire-fighters sprinkled the silo interior and drained its contents into 3 dumpsters. Site access was reopened at 6:30 am and a specialist firm verified the installations prior to the resumption of normal plant activity around 9 am. Wood pieces had partially plugged the edger machine suction system. The accumulated wood chips then heated when coming into contact with the saw before being suctioned towards the silo. The operator installed spark detectors in the suction pipes and modified the production process in coordination with the edger manufacturer.
