Upon returning from lunch around 1:30 pm, employees at a concrete silo noticed that a fire had erupted in the material handling tower near the pendel conveyor, the cleaner-separator and a wagon loading gate filled with rape seed. Site personnel were evacuated. Fire-fighters flooded the gate and disassembled pipes and ducts in order to prevent the fire from spreading. Around 6 pm, a thermal camera detected residual hotspots in the gate, which was subsequently drained. The fire was definitively extinguished at 8 pm, yet the site remained under fire-fighter monitoring throughout the following night. Extinction water was recovered, analysed and eliminated by a specialist subcontractor. The rape seed burned during the fire was incorporated into the compost. Property damage was evaluated at €250,000.
