Fire broke out around 9 pm on a 6,000cu.m outdoor stockpile of wood chips at a processing centre for metals and industrial waste. Arriving onsite 15 min after being notified, fire-fighters contained the outbreak using 5 variable-flow nozzles and 2 turret nozzles; 2 of the facility’s bucket loaders served to remove the smouldering wood chips in order to complete extinction of the blaze. As employees had forgotten to close the shutoff valve before discharge into the public storm drain network, fire extinction water did not remain confined onsite. The fire was apparently set by an arsonist. The Classified Facilities Inspectorate noted a lack of written fire safety procedures as well as mistakes committed when declaring the accident, resulting in an official citation proposed for issuance by the Prefect.
