For over 10 days, a fierce Mistral wind carried away plastic bags and other waste stored in the open-air waste landfill site outside a household waste disposal site. The fields surrounding the establishment were strewn with rubbish, the surrounding trees were covered with plastic and numerous piles of waste floated on the nearby canal. The pollution affected almost 200 ha of land causing significant visual nuisances and unpleasant odours. The winds gusting over 130 km/h that caused this pollution ripped the meshing from windbreak fences and other protective meshing that prevented waste from flying away. A complaint was filed against the disposal site operator. Pending the commissioning of a baling unit with waste being delivered and processed in a closed building, prevention provisions have been implemented, including halting deliveries of waste when the wind speed exceeds 110 km/h.
