Following the lunch break, a fire broke out in the welding shop of a trailer and skip manufacturing company following a short circuit on a welding machine. The fire set the equipment alight and then spread to the tools and neighbouring gas and electricity distribution networks (compressed air, ATAL, acetylene, and oxygen, etc.). The rubber pipes collapsed under the heat thus feeding the fire with welding gases. In a neighbouring room, the workshop manager, alerted by the noise of the fire, immediately turned off the gas and electricity supplies. The staff could not control the fire as the centre of the outbreak was inaccessible due to the thick black smoke. Fire-fighters equipped with self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) contained the fire using powder extinguishers and ventilated the building. Traffic in the street was halted during the intervention. Property damage was estimated at €14,000, but there were no operating losses. The equipment supplier commissioned an expert to determine the causes of the short circuit on the welding machine. If necessary, the manufacturer shall inspect the 30 other machines of the same type in operation. The operator is reorganising its work stations in order to locate electrical sources away from gas distribution points.
