A fire broke out in the shredding workshop of a tyre reprocessing plant. The installation in question was used to separate the metal parts in the shredded tyre fragments so that they could be stored in a bin. The fire was already serious when it was discovered by the employees. Thick smoke triggered the fire alarm which cut off the mains power supply, shut down the conveyors and sent a warning message to staff mobile phones. Whilst waiting for the emergency services to arrive, the employees contained the fire using fire extinguishers. The external fire-fighters extinguished the fire and took the incandescent material to a plot of neighbouring land in order to extinguish and cool it. Seven employees and seven fire-fighters suffered from minor smoke inhalation during the intervention. The insurance company carried out an appraisal and identified the cause of the fire: a drive roller on the metal structures had become magnetic and caused the scrap metal to jam in the upper part of the conveyor. This build-up caused resulted in significant overheating. The shredder upstream of the metal element removal system and the associated conveyor were destroyed, and 2 other conveyors were damaged, along with the storage bin for metal parts. The roof above the installations and power cables were also damaged. After the damage had been repaired, an approved organisation carried out safety inspections, by checking the integrity of the electrical installation and the operation of the fire detection unit, in addition to filling and checking the fire extinguishers used. The operator must send proof of these inspections to the inspection authorities for classified facilities, in addition to proof of the prevention and protection systems that it intends to install before being authorised to restart its operations. It must also remove the material moved to the neighbouring plot of land, which was covered with earth to make sure that it was extinguished and report on the environmental impacts of the fire extinguishing water. It must draw up written guidelines on the actions to be taken in the event of a fire and establish maintenance procedures for the installations. The fire had only a minor environmental impact. This fire highlighted the need to separate the tyre storage from the shredding installations.
