At night, solutions of phosphoric acid (diluted to 4%), soda ash (30 g/litre) and a passivator (diluted to 3%) flowed into the storm drain network of an industrial park and then into a nearby creek following a malicious act. Despite being equipped with a retention basin compliant with regulatory provisions, the simultaneous opening of valves on four 1,000-litre containers caused a 2,000-litre spill of these surface treatment products. The next morning at 7 in noticing the incident, the facility operator alerted the gendarmerie and city hall, plugged the network and hired a specialist to clean the spill. Measurements recorded at the outlet into the stream revealed a pH of 6.1. Subsequent to this act of vandalism, the operator plans to install a retention basin capable of containing all volumes stored on-site, limit the number of full containers outside the buildings, introduce a system to prohibit access to the valves, and build a fence and roof around the storage zone.
