On a Thursday around 5 pm, along one of the production lines in a carpet factory, fire broke out inside a natural gas-fired drying oven. The line had been operating in normal production phase. The blaze was detected by the line supervisor, who noticed smoke apparently being released from the sides of the oven. The alarm was sounded, a team of first responders mobilised and the internal emergency plan activated. The oven’s electrical and gas intakes were neutralised and the 80 employees evacuated in three shifts for safety precautions. The fire was extinguished using portable powder extinguishers (water was not used); this rapid response served to limit the accident consequences. The relatively intact oven still had to undergo a thorough inspection. The fire had already been extinguished upon arrival of external fire-fighters, who nonetheless shut off all fluid and energy inlets and ventilated the premises; the polyamide and polyethylene present in the oven had burned in releasing a thick smoke cloud. The factory suspended activities for 2 hours, though the production line involved would remain closed until the following Monday morning. By breaking free and hitting fan blades on the ventilation system, a metal plate had caused the sparks that initiated the fire outbreak in some carpet. The factory operator was required to submit an accident report indicating the origin and causes, along with subsequent measures to adopt in order to decrease the probability of recurrence.
