In the courtyard of a plant manufacturing hardware items and champagne buckets, fire broke out in a series of dumpsters containing powder chemical products (e.g. lime, detergents, flocculants, sulphates, chlorides) and industrial waste (wood, iron, aluminium chips, ferrous metals, paint cans, plastics, etc.). The blaze spread to a lightweight outbuilding standing in the facility courtyard. Fire-fighters contained the outbreak before it could reach the site’s semi-finished products and solid wastes (big bags of metal hydroxide sludge, brass waste) stored in the former brass and Zamak foundry. The site’s surface treatment unit tanks and stockpiles of chemical products placed on the other side of the courtyard remained protected. High ambient heat undoubtedly caused ignition of this mix of greasy sawdust and aluminium dust contained in the dumpster.
