At 2 pm, fire broke out on a stockpile of ordinary industrial waste (OIW) awaiting sorting; the blaze extended to paper/cardboard products packaged in rolls. A neighbour notified fire services around 2:50 pm and attempted in vain to extinguish the outbreak with a hose. Fire-fighters started battling the blaze at 3:15; staff arrived as of 3:20 to move the ignited rolls and adjacent rolls via forklift. The situation was brought under control by 7 pm, and the fire was declared extinguished at about 1 in the morning. At 10 the next morning, the fire re-ignited upon opening the rolls but could be extinguished within an hour. A nearby lorry was damaged due to heat radiation. The extinction water did not reach the ADOUR River thanks to having closed the storm drain valve. This water was subsequently pumped. The rolls of plastic waste (10 tonnes) were not burned. The origin of this fire remained unknown (malicious act or lens effect?). Fire propagation from the bulk OIW depot to the rolls indicated inadequate depot insulation. The site operator improved warehousing zone insulation, as well as fire-fighter access to the fire water reserve as empty bins had been cluttering this part of the facility. Moreover, the fire burned OIW awaiting sorting that should never have been stored outside, since the outdoor cells were intended for non-recyclable OIW. This incident resulted from a press malfunction a few days prior that sequentially affected the paper/cardboard depot. Nonetheless, the operator stipulated that the reaction of recyclable and non-recyclable OIW to fire was basically comparable.
