At the end of the day on a plant site with 5 cereal storage silos, one of the 4 cells of a silo ripped open, as it was being drained, over half its periphery and extending 10 m high. Fortunately, this incident had no physical impacts, as no one was located in the vicinity of the cell when it broke, and merely spread several hundred tonnes of grain and concrete blocks in the facility courtyard. According to the operator, the likely cause was a lack of sufficient reinforcement in the concrete during silo construction. The Inspection Authorities for Classified Facilities suggested that the Prefect order the operator to suspend activity of the damaged silo until a certified body could substantiate the strength of the 3 remaining cells. The operator produced an analysis report of this accident, commissioned an inspection of the other on-site silos and listed its other facilities within the Aube Department containing silos of an identical design. After completing these steps, the operator was to propose additional investigations and/or works.
