An explosion occurred during the destruction of ammunition, killing one process operator and injuring another. The destruction of so-called “bomblets” ammunition (containing hexogen) is made inside a bunker as follows: the “bomblets” are removed from inside a 155 mm artillery shell, then the detonation device is removed. The remaining parts are cooled down and crushed so that the materials can be recycled. The process is automated with the help of pre-programmed machines.
The detonation occurred in the bunker during the destruction process. The fire and rescue service were alerted. At the scene, they extinguished the fire and removed the deceased operator. The injured operator managed to get out of the bunker herself. She was attended to by the fire and rescue service. Since the operations were conducted in a bunker, no effect on the outside environment has been reported. The authorities are investigating the causes of the accident.
