A 37-year-old man was killed at 9:15 p.m. as he was checking the level of a 4,500 L oil tank with his 21-year-old nephew. When emergency crews arrived on scene, the oil tank was engulfed in flames ; It took firefighters from Tonganoxie, Fairmount and Stranger townships about an hour to put out the fire. Emergency personnel found the older man’s body lying about 30 yards south of the tank. According to the authorities, the man, whose activity on the site was a second job, lit a match as he had trouble seing the crude oil level in the darkness, thus sparking the ignition.
