ARIA 18325

Lightning, often associated with the powers of gods in mythology, can have serious impacts on industrial facilities and entail human, social, environmental and economic consequences. The ARIA database records about 100 lightning accidents that took place in France between October 1967 and July 2007 that impacted classified installations and piping networks. The analysis of these events underlines the need to take the direct and indirect effects of lightning into account in safety studies and risk management in facilities. The foreseeable direct and indirect effects need to be clearly identified on vulnerable facilities (tanks, units, piping, electrical and electronic equipment, etc.) on the one hand and a concrete risk prevention strategy ensuring overall protection must be put in place on the other hand. .
