For many years, the farming sector has accounted for nearly 10% of accidents at French classified facilities for environmental protection recorded by BARPI in its ARIA database.

From 2009 to 2021, this synthesis covers 1,259 events at crop-growing and livestock-rearing businesses (not including agri-food sites and farm methanisation facilities). There are two majority hazardous phenomena identified at farms in the sample: fire (85% of events) and discharges of hazardous and/or polluting substances (23% of events). By identifying the disruptions and root causes behind these phenomena, BARPI was able to identify lessons learnt and examples of good practice.
