On 16/01, the police informed the environmental inspection authorities of the presence of suspicious flows on the site of a chemical plant. During an inspection of the establishment on that same day, the environmental inspection authorities noted, at the bottom of the embankment bordering the 600 m³ basin used for storing contaminated water from a workshop and the stormwater basins, the presence of red liquid similar to the effluents contained in this basin. These substances were spreading into the natural environment via an orifice caused by erosion of the embankment. Traces of chemical substances were also noted in line with the drain valve of the storage area’s retention system. According to the police, the said valve had been dismantled in December and not immediately replaced, thereby causing contaminated water and sludge collected in the area’s retention system to spread over the ground adjoining the plant. The environmental inspection authorities drew up a report establishing the facts. A governmental order has prescribed the performance of a study on the cause of the flows observed at the bottom of the embankment and the verification of the leaktightness of the 600 m³ basin by an external company after it has been completely drained.
