Isopropyl alcohol and pentamethylheptane vapours were released at around 2:45 p.m. at a plant that manufactures fasteners for the aerospace and automotive industries. The vapours were released while a road tanker was being loaded with waste cutting oil. The vapours were carried into the plant’s workshops through their doors and windows, which were open because of the summer heat. Eighteen employees were made ill; one was taken to hospital for further examination. The plant’s 328 employees were evacuated and the public emergency services were called in. A safety cordon was put up. The firefighters tested the air, but found no contamination. They left at around at 5:30 p.m. According to the plant operator, as the driver began loading the waste oil, he degassed the tank (which had not been cleaned after the previous load) via a vent from the bottom of the vehicle. Every three months, the firm that recycles this oil has it pumped by a dangerous goods transport company into a 12 m³ above-ground storage tank on the site. The operator is familiar with the cleaning protocol used by the transport company. However, on the day of the accident, the transport company was closed for the summer holidays. The firm therefore contacted another company. The plant operator is looking into ways to improve its haulier training procedure.
