A fire broke out at around midnight in a 200 m³ cement-works silo containing 40 tonnes of waste (two-thirds dried sewage sludge and one-third polyurethane foam beads). The operator inerted it with carbon dioxide, but the fire reignited at around 3:30 a.m. The firefighters, alerted at around 4:00 a.m., extinguished the fire and emptied the silo. They sprayed a layer of foam over the storage area in order to starve the flames of oxygen. The extinguishing water was collected in a pond and the sludge was taken away by lorry. Emptying was completed at 5:00 a.m. on 11 July.

The fire may have been caused by the self-heating of silo contents after three days of remaining in place. The inspection authorities for classified facilities noted that the control room did not contain alarms for the temperature and carbon monoxide sensors in the silo or for inerting efficiency. In addition, the adequacy of the safety measures in place for the silo contents must be rechecked as the silo had originally been designed to hold meat and bone meal.
