At around 9:00 a.m., the manager of a grain silo noticed a fire in a dryer that was not in operation. He alerted the fire-fighters. They found the seat of the fire in a pile of sunflower-seed waste at the base of the dryer. They removed the waste by hand. After checking for other remaining hot spots with a thermographic camera, the fire-fighters left at around 12:00 p.m. No property damage was reported. The fire was caused by incandescent particles sprayed by a grinder that had been used to cut away overtightened bolts in order to replace the buckets on an elevator. The maintenance work had been performed by a contractor between 18 and 20 March. A work authorisation and hot-work permit had been issued beforehand. Regular rounds had been conducted both during and after the work. The operator re-informed its employees about the importance of conducting rounds after hot work is performed.
