In the basement room of a public swimming pool, the unintentional spill of 40 litres of sodium hypochlorite (i.e. bleach) into a hydrochloric acid (HCl) tank around 1:30 pm generated a chlorine (Cl2) release. Noticeable fire-fighting resources were deployed: a 40-person crew, 11 fire engines dispatched from 6 emergency response centres. Fire-fighters evacuated 160 people; 2 employees took ill. Measurement readings indicated the presence of 0.3 ppm Cl2 in the rooms reserved for the general public. The gas emitted was dispersed with a hose; moreover, the premises were ventilated and contents of the 140-litre tank were transferred. The response lasted until 8 pm; the police visited the site.
