On 18th October, 2009 around 5:30 pm following service start-up outdoors of a new LPG tank the week prior, a gas leak was detected at the level of a connection by a tyre factory employee. After deeming this leak to be minor and clogging most of it, the operator ultimately decided to evacuate the entire plant (350 personnel) at 10 pm, due to a persistent gas odour. Alerted around 10:30 pm, both the emergency services and local police deployed tremendous resources. The police blocked traffic, even though explosimeter measurements indicated a risk-free situation. In light of the difficulties encountered in requesting intervention from subcontractors on-call, local fire services wound up plugging the residual leak despite the complete facility shutdown as of 5:30 pm. Personnel returned to their shift at midnight. The machinery was repaired and inspected during the morning of 19th October by an external supplier.
