A fire started in a tyre manufacturing plant. Rubber crumbs resulting from the rubbing of tyres accumulated against a plug formed from metallic thread in the extraction pipe entering the cyclone. Sparks were produced due to the brushing against the metallic structure causing them to ignite up to the cyclone dust collector. Bits of metallic thread were torn during brushing and extracted by aspiration. Company staff controlled the fire with extinguishers; fire-fighters were called to the scene and sprayed the pipe. The fire was quickly extinguished. This type of fire outbreak had already occurred. No impact was observed on the environment. Subsequent to this incident, the following actions were adopted: in the short term, installation of access panels on the extraction pipes and cyclone, with fixed access for daily cleaning. Plans were also made to install a water spraying hose in the cyclone. Over the long-term, a study of the entire extraction system would be undertaken.
