An unusual release of smoke occurred at around 8:30 am from the bag filter housing of the dust removal installation at an iron foundry. Staff shut off the dust extractor and activated the distribution line set-up in order to prevent the outbreak of fire. After observing the insufficiency of this fire extinction system, the operator alerted public emergency services. The fire department arrived at 9:25 am and quickly controlled the blaze; they left the scene at about 11 am. No one was hurt but the bag filters were destroyed. Fire extinction water was confined to a buffer tank in the ground at the site’s lowest point. The inappropriate filter design (accumulation of residual dust not removed by the backwashing cycles), the presence of incandescent particles in the sleeves, inability of the system to detect temperature rises in some areas of the dust collection box, and an inappropriate fire extinction system were all reasons behind this incident. Following the accident, the operator was required to modify the dust extractor by equipping it with a detection and extinction system for incandescent particles, install a fire detection system and improve control procedures for the dust extraction system.
