During a pyrotechnic waste burning process carried out inside an explosives production plant, 2 cinders became airborne due to a slight wind. The first was stopped by a barricade and ignited a fire, while the second fell back to the ground 200 m away and ignited a wheat field. Even though part of the parcel had already been harvested, still 250 m² of cereal crop over a 20 m to 30 m diameter area were scorched. The 7 members of the plant’s emergency response team along with 5 outside fire-fighters were able to control the blaze. The plant operator decided to have site personnel monitor the parcel in order to avoid any eventual re-ignition and anticipated installing a grating in the burning sectors to eliminate this type of scenario from recurring.

Experts recalled that safety reports and guidelines for burning operations must incorporate the risk of fire propagation in the environment, depending for the most part on weather conditions (heat, wind, etc.).
