A large fire occurred at 10:30 on a low tier Seveso establishment storing about 14.000 m3 of different chemicals, mainly solvents that fuelled the fire (acetone, styrene, methanol, isopropanol, hexane, cyclohexanone…). About 180 firemen fought the fire until the next day ; they installed absorptive booms along the fence to prevent any leakage to seashore.

The site suffered heavy damage : 36 out of 45 tanks were completely destroyed and 4 partially. The material losses are evaluated over 2,000,000 euro ; the site stopped its activity ;. Static electricity or spark caused by accidental strike/friction of metal equipment in the drum filling station where xylene was being transferred through a centrifugal pump might be the cause of the accident.
