A fire broke out at 12.05 pm in a company producing synthetic latex and rubber for the tyre industry, automobile and building sectors and the paper industry. A 3,000 m² warehouse housing 2,000 t of SBR synthetic rubber was affected. The sprinkler system was activated in the area affected, as well as the alarm. A technician went on site and alerted the on-call team as he saw the smoke. The staff used 2 monitor nozzles and 2 fire hose cabinets. A huge amount of smoke was released from the room. A section of the building’s siding was dismantled to provide better access to the fire. The operator activated its internal emergency plan at 12.10 pm. Firefighters, the police and the Authorities were called. The inspection authorities for classified facilities were alerted at around 12.30 pm. The rubber finishing installations were shut down. The fire was contained at around 12.20 pm but site surveillance was maintained while waiting for the emergency services at around 12.30 pm. The emergency services used 4 foam nozzles and 6 deluge nozzles (3 with water and 3 with foam), as the smoke was very thick. Only the operator’s foam concentrate was used. At 12.37 pm, the internal emergency plan siren was activated, at 12.45 pm, the operator alerted the Mayors of the 2 neighbouring municipalities. At 2 pm, the alert was lifted. Fifteen batches (wooden crates containing rubber) were lost in the fire. The fire extinguishing water was contained in the warehouse’s retention area. This water was recovered by pumping towards the retention pond. Almost 1,500 m³ of rubber were burned over an area of around one hundred m². An expert was appointed. His conclusions established that the fire was caused by a malicious act. A legal enquiry was carried out. The operator repaired its storage area and prohibited access to the sides of the building to prevent external personnel from entering the site. The employees were informed of the situation.
