A fire broke out on the heater battery of a starch dryer in a starch products manufacturing plant. The installation’s high temperature safety mechanism and the spark sensor tripped its automatic shutdown at 1.36 am. The technician saw that a fire had started, he alerted the station manager who called the fire brigade and on-call staff. Fire-fighters arrived at the scene at 2 am, contained the fire within 15 min and had completely extinguished the fire at around 3 am. The check of the entire installation (inside cyclones and grinder, drying loop, disintegrator, storage silos, etc.) showed no defects, and it was restarted at 7 am. According to the operator, the slow burning of approximately 25 kg of starch, accumulated at the heater battery outlet, would have been the cause of the fire. Following the accident, the operator checked and cleaned the entire installation (in particular the heater battery outlet) once a week and before any restart in the event of automatic shutdown.
