Fire broke out around 9 pm on a wood pellet manufacturing line. Notified by the unit’s automatic detection system, the production manager observed the appearance of smoke at the scene. He alerted the on-call manager, who in turn contacted the plant director and first responders. The production team deployed the site’s fire nozzles and extinguishers and were able to contain the blaze. Upon their arrival at about 9:30 pm, fire-fighters evacuated the remaining incandescent elements in order to fully complete the extinction. The operator set up a monitoring response lasting through the night. The unit resumed production the next day around 4 pm. One worker overcome by smoke had to be hospitalised for a few hours to undergo exams. Wood stockpiles and supply inventories were not damaged; sawdust and pellets consumed during the fire were recovered to feed the wood boiler. The accident was caused by the intrusion of a metal part in the press, despite the presence of magnets along the manufacturing chain. One month after the fire, the operator fitted the unit with magnets 5 times the strength, in addition to improving the site’s fire-fighting capacities, intervention procedures and smoke removal systems.
