In a cereal silo, fire broke out on the upper part of a 350-tonne capacity cell subsequent to cross-cutting works. Falling, incandescent dust ignited a portion of the 50 tonnes of stored wheat. The fire threatened to spread to other storage cells. Fire-fighters installed a 60-m safety perimeter, continuously monitored cell temperature and measured the cell’s explosion potential. The cell was opened on its upper part for ventilation. First responders, wearing self-breathing apparatuses and working in pairs, covered the wheat with a foam blanket and drained the cell using a nozzle at the extraction point. The safety zone was extended to 300 m during these operations, while gendarmes oversaw the evacuation of 22 firms. Employees and fire-fighters worked together to drain 2 other cells where hotspots had been detected by thermal camera. The next day, 3 more cells received the same treatment.
