On a Sunday afternoon, fire broke out at a 50-tonne outdoor stockpile of waste paper bales in the northern courtyard of a moulded board packaging plant. A few minutes later, a second fire outbreak occurred in the southern courtyard on a stockpile of finished products. Alerted by neighbours, the operator manually activated the water curtain, which efficiently protected the production building’s northern facade. The distance separating the southern face from all external storage (over 15 m), combined with the wind direction, prevented flames from spreading to the building. A robust response was deployed (84 fire-fighters, 10 fire trucks, 2 tanker lorries). The fire that threatened the surrounding vegetation spread to empty barrels placed in retention facilities and stored adjacent to a ditch extending alongside a marshy zone. The paper stockpiles were evacuated onto a neighbouring parcel, where they took 3 days to be entirely consumed. To contain the risk of retention basin overflow due to fire extinction water, first responders plugged both ends of the ditch as a preventive measure. A specialised firm then pumped retention basin contents and stripped soil from the basin through a 15-cm thickness. This accident was attributed to malicious intent.
