In a factory subject to Classified Facilities authorisation manufacturing parquet flooring, fire broke out at 8:30 am at the base of a 320 cu.m. silo containing very fine sawdust, which was being collected at the workshops. Employees noticed a burning smell and followed the site’s safety protocol by shutting off the electricity supply and boiler, and notifying the fire station. Upon arrival, first responders drained the silo via a side hatch under the protection of a nozzle to avoid any dust or sawdust explosion. Fire-fighters observed that sawdust combustion had progressed into the silo by creating combustion “galleries”. The fire sources detected were extinguished sequentially as responders advanced inside the silo using a self-propelled nozzle lent by another facility. The next day, a specialised subcontractor was called to suction the sawdust with a custom piece of equipment, allowing fire-fighters to continue their extinction efforts. The blaze was caused by equipment malfunction. The Classified Facilities inspector requested the operator to submit a detailed report of the accident, accompanied by measures adopted to avoid its recurrence. After this fire, the operator equipped the site with its own self-propelled nozzle.
