At 4 am., carbon monoxide ignited in an electric furnace of a foundry, creating a gas explosion causing severe material damage. The furnace roofing collapsed emitting flames from the slake outflow opening. Noone was hurt but the material damage are estimated at 2 M euros.

The operator improved the post-combustion of carbon monoxide by mixing oxygen in the waste gas stream when the oxygen content in the oven is lower than ambient air (21%). He sat off a pre-alarm when the CO concentration of 1 300 ppm is reached; an alarm stopping the oxygen feed and the furnace (energy supply and charging operations) when the CO concentration tops 2 600 ppm and an evacuation alarm at a CO concentration of 4 900 ppm.
