A 67 m high conveyor belt that caught fire in a steelworks caused the metal structure of the conveyor to collapse. Significant human resources and equipment (76 fire-fighters, 13 heavy-duty fire engines, 6 x 500 l/min variable flow hoses, etc.) were deployed. The spontaneous combustion of highly reactive DRI (Direct Reduced Iron) caused the fire. There were heavy financial losses: reconstruction costs: €6.7 million; additional operating costs during the repairs: €800,000; operating losses: €9.3 million; safety improvements: ~ €700,000. After the accident, the operator installed: a temperature detection system above the belts (1 sensor every 2 metres) and in the DRI storage hoppers, dust extractors at the bottom of the belts, emergency exits to facilitate the evacuation of employees, a first-aid hose system on the conveyor belts and a 80 m³ fire extinguishing water tank for the new conveyor.
